Foreword to the 17th Symposium GiESCO 2011

 

The 17th International Symposium GiESCO 2011 (Group of International Experts of Vitivinicultural Systems for CoOperation) takes place from August 29th till September 2nd at the "Viticulture and Enology Sciences Master" of Turin University (Asti and Alba) - Italy, under the patronage of OIV (International Organization for Vine and Wine), Accademia Italiana della Vite e del Vino, Piedmont regional Government, Italian Agricultural Minister, and the Chaire UNESCO Culture et Traditions du Vin. The Symposium covers many fields of viticultural sciences, and collects about 150 presentations (oral and poster) by researchers and scientists from 17 countries.

GESCO was the original acronym for "Groupe d'Etude des Systèmes de COnduite de la vigne". It was started, as European group, by Alain Carbonneau and other colleagues, and, as the name implies, was originally focused on training systems. The group grew, took in researchers out of Europe, and extended its scientific interests to most of the topics of all viticulture; this is why the group recently renamed itself as GiESCO.

The periodical meetings of this group are good occasions to renew personal contacts, as well as to make new ones, in order to facilitate cooperation in research and education.

The 17th International Symposium GiESCO 2011, for many viticulturists, is also a good occasion to know Italian viticulture, especially the Piedmont's one, which is renowned worldwide.

I would like to dedicate this Symposium to the memory of Prof. Italo Eynard that, besides to be an excellent viticulture scientist and professor, was an enthusiastic promoter of the GESCO group at its beginning.

Finally I would like to thanks all people involved in the organization of this event, and all institutions and companies that have financially supported the symposium or offered donations: without their contribute, this meeting would have been impossible to realize.
